When we ask those who have visited the “Institut Chiari & Siringomielia & Escoliosis de Barcelona” (ICSEB) about their first impressions, they usually agree with the idea that ICSEB is primarily a research centre.
Since Dr. Miguel B. Royo Salvador graduation in medicine in 1974, exactly 40 years have passed until today. As the ICSEB founder and current director confirms, he has never stopped researching.
We could be happy, as the monolithic ideas of an interventonist past are gradually being abandoned. Then, the craniectomy or sub-occipital decompression were the panacea of modern treatment[1]. Currently a growing number of specialists approach the ICSEB to take part in the training courses or to join one of the numerous research projects under consideration.
We cannot say that the ICSEB has arrived at the end of the road and that the theory defenden by Dr. Miguel B. Royo Salvador is the answer to all questions that may arise; to do so, it is necessary to never abandon this baseline that was established 40 years ago and that our main researcher repeats perserveringly: research, research and research.
[1] The craniectomy or suboccipital decompression has a post-surgical mortality rate that is much higher than that of Arnold Chiari I itself (0,5 – 2% of the standard procedure- craniectomy- compared to 0,001% of the disease itself).
