Lorenzo Bassano. Cord Traction Syndrome. Descent of the cerebellar tonsils.
Surgery date: January 2012

Mrs. Serra started to progressively loose her vision ten years ago. After different wrong suppositions, such as multiple sclerosis or mental disorder, by doctors that she had approached, she found out in the end that an Arnold Chiari I Syndrome affected her.

She discovered on the Internet, that on the contrary to what the doctors were telling her, that it is asymptomatical, everything that this disease could involve a whole world of disabling symptoms, and she started to search for a solution.

She then came to Barcelona for a consultation at the Institut Chiari, but when she finally underwent the sectioning of the filum terminale surgery it was already too late, and the loss of vision turned out to be an irreversible manifestation that in her case persists.

Grace has a son who currently 15 years old, Lorenzo Bassano, who since he was little always seemed to be very similar to his mother, also in some aspects like headaches, tiring out easily, etc.

In the light of the information obtained during her clinical experience with the Institut Chiari de Barcelona regarding the familiarity of the syndrome, the patient insisted with her family doctor (who didn’t believe it to be necessary) and finally managed to get a check up MRI : as a matter of fact Lorenzo had a descent of the cerebellar tonsils, and the suspicion was confirmed. She immediately had him undergo surgery with Dr. Royo, in order to stop the disease before the damage that it causes would turn irreversible.

In the check up one and half years after the surgery, the result is that Lorenzo has improved, according to himself by 70%, and the family is calmer, they can see that also in his case the disease has stopped in its evolution, and they now have the hope that he will never reach Grace’s state.
